What I Did Last Summer

Here are some of the collages I made, beginning in Annisquam. I will use them as the basis for drawings and paintings.

After watching Lifetime’s “Georgia O’Keefe” I happened to catch “Project Runway.” Although I hate the melodrama of  this program, the assignment was intriguing so I had to watch it. The designers were taken to the L.A. Times and asked to construct a garment using piles of newspapers which were stacked up by day. Each person took a different approach–folding, pasting, weaving, crushing, sewing paper into three dimensional forms. It would have been interesting to follow each person to learn how they came up with their ideas–what aspect of the papers stimulated them–to watch the creative process unfold.  However, as a reality show the emphasis is on personal attacks and personality.

The following day in the Times, there was a column entitled, “Poetic Connections.” These are “found” poems: lines published in Craigslist with line and stanza breaks added. This was fun to read and it fits in with my collages-making and fascination with detritus.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Peace-Love-Art

I haven’t posted in awhile, but I’ve been busy. I’ve been drawing daily for The Still Life Project. You can view 90 of my drawings, and the group project in three galleries linked to our site. There are still drawings trickling in. The group will be meeting this week to evaluate the project. A visit to New York is always stimulating. Last weekend we saw The Morandi Exhibit at the Met, Miro at Moma and Alfred Kubin at the Neue Gallery. I worked on a small collage on the train and did a few drawings at MOMA.

This from Fact Magazine, UK: To congratulate Barack Obama on becoming the President-Elect of The United States of America, we’re offering him a free lifetime subscription to FACT, a copy of the Gang Gang Dance album and a tin of Max Tundra soup. Change is good…

After our show at the Art Alliance, I took a couple of days off. I found a small, very old wedding photo album (at Goodwill) just perfect for my new work. The interior pages are black, and I have started a few pieces that I would like to translate into paintings. These are just starting points; I may want to add to them or make changes later.

It is an indication of the fractured state of the music industry that not only is Gang Gang Dance now identifiably a trendy New York band, it is also signifying its status in a very visible, of-the-moment way.

A Shout Out to GGD

Gang Gang Dance made the front page of the New York Times on line today. The album, St. Dymphna, comes out tomorrow. It is awesome!
